UMHLANGA COLLEGE - a place to GROW

The opportunity to choose excellent schooling close to home and work has been afforded to parents in the Umhlanga Ridge area with the establishment of Umhlanga College, a pre-primary and primary school for boys and girls. The school opened its doors in January 2003.

Located in a beautiful setting, with sweeping views across cane fields, less than two kilometres north of the Gateway shopping complex, Umhlanga College's tranquil setting is conducive to learning and outdoor activities, with beautiful old trees and abundant bird life. Environmental learning opportunities abound and special sporting opportunies such as horse-riding and golf, are offered at the school.

The school is an initiative of Durban Girls' College, a school with more than 125 years of heritage and excellence in education in Durban. The school's management has recognised the need to provide the standard of education and values intrinsic at College in this fast-growing region north of Durban.

Located on what was formerly Burnside farm, amongst magnificent indigenous trees and surrounded by sugar cane, this fledgling school has already written its own history with its restoration and conservation policies. Seventy-two indigenous trees were planted on the property in its first year of operation.

The education programme is be underpinned by, and twinned with, the existing programme at College. The school is headed by Mrs Margo Reid who is supported by a team of dedicated teachers. The foundation phase of the school begins with a playgroup for the two year olds, who then move into the pre-primary (Grades 000, 00 & R) and junior primary (Grades 1,2 & 3)phases. The school has come of age in 2009 and sports a full senior primary school (Grades 4 – 7).

The remodeling of the stately College Galleon as a sleek clipper in the colours of green, blue and gold of Umhlanga College has been an exciting and successful new venture. The voyage has brought with it the Christian ethos and solid foundation of Durban Girls' College, but the school rejoices in its own coeducational and pre-school identity.

At Umhlanga College we are educating the head, heart and hands.
