THE MATRIC DANCE 2009

The Matric Dance 2000 and shine

When the matrics of two thousand and shine woke up on Friday 8 May, the mere three hours of school we had to pressure through seemed too much to bear yet, somehow we made it and at 10h15 we were zooming off to be styled, powdered and plucked to perfection.  Then it was suddenly 7 and time for us to make our grand entrances in boats, fire engines and a fleet of Mozzie cabs - complete with fireworks.  Walking through droves of people cheering for us, we were confronted by a line of teachers, a smart-looking Mr Elliott and the most elegant Swan Lake we’d ever imagined. What followed is for the most part a normal dance.  We ‘ooed’ over gorgeous décor, ate delicious food and waited in endless lines to get pictures taken.  Some of us even had the honour of the decorative foliage wanting to follow us home (until observant partners plucked them out).  Still the matrics made the evening their own with live performances from Yasmine Allen, Thando Meth and Lungile Tembe, as well as our unique awards ceremony (I got first female president).  Also, the amazing waitresses (who didn’t laugh when I blushingly requested another knife after having dropped mine whilst simultaneously splattering my friend with sauce) and the rest of Grade 11 who brought over magical dream to life.  Thank you to everyone who let us shine, we won’t forget.
