Admission Information

Thank you very much for showing an interest in Durban Girls’ College as the school to which you would like to send your daughter.

We have pleasure in enclosing our admission package.

We are extremely proud of our tradition and our reputation. Our aim is to provide an environment which is conducive to the attainment of top class academic results, high moral and ethical standards based on Christian values, social and cultural awareness and participation in one or more of the many sports available at College. At College every girl is important, and we will look for the best in your daughter and will encourage her. She will make friendships within the gates of College that will sustain her for the rest of her life.

We also extend a cordial invitation to you to attend one of our school Open Days or Open Evenings. You will experience our school spirit and the qualities which make College special. Should you be unable to attend an Open Day but wish to visit the school on another occasion we invite you to contact Mrs Debbie McWilliam on (031) 268 7250 or admissions@dgc.co.za

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Admission Procedures
The “Application for Admission” form must be completed, signed by both parents, and returned accompanied by the application fee.
Parents are advised to seek admission early as places are frequently oversubscribed before the admission date.
In the year preceding proposed admission, parents will be contacted by email. If no letter has been received from the school by March of the year preceding the admission year, it is the parents’ responsibility to contact the school.

Girls will be required to sit an entrance examination in English, Mathematics and/or other key subjects or, in the case of Grades 00, R and Grade 1, a school readiness assessment. Parents will be notified whether or not their daughters have been accepted. Girls are accepted into Grade 00 from the year in which they turn four or five (depending on their date of birth), into Grade R from the year in which they turn five or six (depending on their date of birth) and into Grade 1 from the year in which they turn six or seven (depending on their date of birth).

Girls and parents will be afforded an opportunity to have a tour around the school and will be invited to our Open Evening or Open Day.

Acceptance Fee
In the event of a place being offered by the school, a non-refundable Acceptance Fee of
R8 000 is payable, either by cheque or direct deposit, and is in addition to any subsequent tuition fee which becomes due. This fee is designated for the future development and upgrade of school facilities from which your daughter will benefit during her time at College.
The fee must accompany a Contract of Enrolment in favour of the school which is required to be signed and initialed by both parents or guardians, or, in the case of one parent/guardian, the parent/guardian and an acceptable surety. Full contact details, as provided for on the form, must be completed by both signatories.

Tuition Fees
Tuition fees include the provision of tuition, career counselling, pastoral care, use of the libraries and sports facilities. In addition tuition fees cover the provision of a large range of sporting and cultural activities. Specific details are available on request.

Capital Development Levy
A compulsory Capital Development Levy of R1 200 per pupil will be levied per annum by the School and forwarded on to the Durban Girls’ College Trust. The Durban Girls’ College Trust is instrumental in assisting College to grow and develop its academic, music, cultural and sporting facilities.

Boarding Fees
Boarding fees include board, supervised preparation time and care in the sick bay for short periods.

Boarding Deposit
A deposit equivalent to one term’s boarding fee is payable by no later than 31 October of the year preceding admission to College House. This deposit will be credited to the pupil’s account in the last term of attendance at College, or withdrawal from College House, if earlier.

Sibling Allowance
A tuition fee concession of 5% of the annual fee is given for the second daughter, and 10% for each subsequent child, provided that they attend the school concurrently.

Scholarships
Several scholarships are available at Grade 8 level. These awards are tenable for the whole of a girl’s senior school career provided that she fulfills the conditions of the award. Parents requesting consideration for a bursary will be asked to provide a confidential motivation.

Payment Terms
Fees are paid by the completion of a debit order instruction form. The debit order may be for a quarterly payment with fees paid in full on the first day of each term, or monthly payment from January to October.

An alternative to the debit order is to pay the annual fees in full on or before the first day of the academic year at a reduced level as specified on the schedule of fees.

Interest will be charged at the ruling prime overdraft rate in all outstanding balances.

Should your daughter be offered a place at College, a detailed schedule of fees and terms and methods of payment will be sent to you on acceptance.

Parents who experience problems with the payment of fees during their daughter’s years at College are advised to seek an interview with the Headmaster and Bursar.

Notice of Withdrawal
In the event of a pupil not taking up her enrolment or being withdrawn from the school, the parent, guardian or other person responsible for the payment of fees is required to give in writing to the Headmaster, one full term’s notice in advance of the enrolment/withdrawal date.

Failure to tender such notice will result in a term’s fees being payable in accordance with clause 4 of the signed undertaking.
